Sal Mineo: Dr Milo

Sal (Salvatore) Mineo (born in the Bronx, New York City, 10th January 1939, died in Hollywood, California on 12th February 1976), first rose to prominence after his performance as John "Plato" Crawford in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He followed this up with the role of Angel Obregon II in Giant (1956) and attempted to launch a recording career, but by the early sixties he found himself typecast in the role of "troubled teenager" and he was becoming too old to play the type of role that had made him famous. His sexuality led to him being not considered appropriate for leading roles and his career went into decline. His final film role was as Dr Milo in Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971), though he did find some work on TV and in the theatre.

Sal Mineo was murdered in the alley behind his apartment block in West Hollywood in 1976.

The following images from Escape were kindly supplied by my good friend Lawgiver and also feature Kim Hunter as Dr Zira and Roddy McDowall as Cornelius.
